NASA administrator Jim Brydenstin announced the appointment of Kathy Lueders as the next deputy administrator of the Office of Human Research and Exploitation (HEO), making her the first woman to lead the Space Humans program.
As head of the Commercial Crew Program, Dr. Luders has led NASA’s efforts to send astronauts into space on board private spacecraft since 2014. Last month she oversaw the first private flight of the Demo 2 crew of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Kathy has successfully managed both the commercial crew and the commercial cargo. She is the right person to lead HEO as we prepare to send astronauts to the moon in 2024, Brydenstin tweeted Friday.
NASA has stated in a press release that the appointment will take effect immediately. Steve Stich will replace Lueders as Commercial Crew Program Manager and Ken Bowershoks will return to HEO as Assistant Administrator.

Katie gives us the extraordinary experience and passion we need to move forward with Artemis and our goal of landing the first woman and the next man on the moon in 2024, Brydenstein said.
She has a strong interest in developing commercial markets in space, which goes back to her early work on the space shuttle program. With Commercial Cargo and now Commercial Crew, she has successfully and safely contributed to the expansion of our country’s industrial base. Kathy is the right person to expand the space economy into the lunar zone and to achieve the ambitious goals we have set.

I want to thank Ken and the entire HEO team for their continued support of Kathy, who made the sales team successful. I know they’ll give her the same support if she takes on a new role, Brydenstein said. This is a crucial moment for the Agency and for the HEO. We still need to get doug and bob home safely, and we’re not gonna lose focus. We want to go to the moon and into space, and Katie will help us get there.
